Years ago when I first became a mom I had the hardest time getting cute pictures of my son. I tried Sears (you can read more about that fiasco on my website) and was greatly disappointed. Then I thought I struck it gold when I found the Picture People (like Portrait Innovations if you are from here). They had much more contemporary props and picture ideas and pictures only took an hour or so to print unlike the one month wait at Sears. But, I soon realized that the 10 minutes in front of a camera with a stranger who did nothing to help get a smile from my child was not working. I can’t tell you how many times I tied to get a good picture and was disappointed. I had never really even thought of custom portraiture at that point.
And this week I had the perfect example (just like my own experience with my kids) of why having someone invest time into your child to get that special smile is vital. I had been waiting months to meet this sweet angel after photographing her big brother last year. Her mom came with one adorable outfit after the next and I am in love with those big brown eyes and dark hair. But, she was not happy. She wanted to be held (even by me!) and sitting alone on the floor was not what she wanted to do. I could have tried for 10 minutes like the big box stores and sent them on their way but I knew we could get this baby girl to smile with some time invested and we did. And, we got so many cute pictures… She did the same thing every time we changed her and moved around her setting but every time we played with her and sang songs and acted goofy and that smile appeared yet again. It was so, so worth it and I am excited to show you just a few from her session!
